DETAILED DESCRIPTION / RIGHTS AND DUTIES
CIP is an Incoterm used for any mode of transportation, according to which the seller is responsible for the delivery of goods to an agreed destination in the buyers country, and must pay for the cost of this carriage, and also bear any costs for obtaining export licences and documents from the country of origin and those for customs export operations. The costs incurred for crossing other countries to reach the final destination are also borne by the seller, as well as insurance costs (unlike CPT).
The sellers risk, however, ends once they have placed the goods on the ship, at the origin destination, including customs fees in the country of destination. The term is considered as complete with the named place of destination (for example, C.I.P. Turin).
